Horror Reader's Advisory
With the surge in popularity of Netflix’s The Bird Box, I think a catchy display could be a good idea to get people’s attention about the horror books on offer at the library. The display itself could include scenes from the movies or tv shows featured (copyright permitting) which would help draw in people to the display.
A small display of available titles along with bookmarks detailing books you might like based on your favorite horror movie/tv show/ video game could go over well and increase circulation of titles that might be languishing on the shelf. The bookmarks would use integrated advisory by connecting book titles to the movie/tv show/video game. Here are some sample lists, but there are many possible popular titles that this kind of bookmark could be done for:
If you liked Netflix’s The Bird Box, try these:
The Silence by Tim Lebbon
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
The Fireman by Joe Hill
The Passage by Justin Cronin
Blindness by Jose Saramago
If you liked Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, try these:
Southern Gods by John Horner Jacobs
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
Cell by Stephen King
The Atlantis Gene by A.G. Riddle
If you liked Black Mirror, try these:
The Dark Net by Benjamin Percy
The Feed by Nick Clark Windo
Broadcast by Liam Brown
The Circle by Dave Eggers
Children of the New World by Alexander Weinstein
If you liked It, try these:
Let Me In (a.k.a. Let the Right One In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist
The Devil Crept In by Ania Ahlborn
The Boy Who Drew Monsters by Keith Donohue
The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
The Death House by Sarah Pinborough

Caitlyn,
ReplyDeleteI really like this idea for a display. I think since Bird Box, and similar titles have received a lot of attention for their film/television adaptations, this would be a wonderful way to grab patrons' attention, and direct them to other titles that may not have gotten the same amount of attention. I like that you provided read-alikes for each individual title, rather than covering horror as a whole (I wish I had done this in my own display pitch). Very nice work!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI like your idea, too. Like a growing number of people we have replaced cable with streaming services. Our library department has an ongoing "Read the Movie" section, but your idea to include popular programs from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, etc. is very timely. Thanks!
I think your idea of including the bookmarks is really smart, because oftentimes the items on your display will fly off the shelf. Great idea and full points!
